Bates P-40 finally makes progress

Postby Randy on Mon Aug 17, 2009 4:15 pm

My 10 year project ,which I am sure nobody believes really exists, is finally moving along and looking like it is going to get completed in this lifetime!! I am using Latex paint thinned with window washer fluid and a few drops of toponal. According to Vallencourt this helps to relieve the surface tension and allow the drops of paint to disperse and flow better. I had my doubts, being an old body man but by golly it worked great. I thinned about 20% and use 20 lbs of air pressure in an auto touch up gun and it was very nice way to paint, especially when you can clean up with water. Hope to add the darker desert camio color tonight.

anyone have any ideas how to upload images? I am under the 4 mb limit but I keep getting an error message.

It is a glyceren like sustance used to make latex flow better when sprayed. I bought the smallest qty you can get at Lowes, which is a quart. You only need a few drops per ounce so don't go buying any, I have a quart left minus a dozen drops!!! With windshield washer fluid as thinner, this stuff is great how it goes on, covers, and flows out. Vallencourt also claims it doesn't need any primer on cloth covering or fiberglass. Anyway, if you need anything let me know, I gotta run- just did 7 miles on the exercise bike and need a shower before we leave with Katie.

Yup, so far everything is masked and painted. Not sure how much furhter I am going. The rudder will have a tri-color of bars painted next. Red, white, and blue and then it has to dry for 30 days before the clear coat goes on. I am also going to paint the engine well chromate green like the flaps and wheel wells. Hope to get going on the cockpit and canopy soon.

Looking good and daughter in college!

Postby Bob Blaney on Tue Sep 08, 2009 7:17 pm

Randy,
Very nice work on the P40. Roy sure knows his stuff on those warbirds.
The best of success to your daughter. Cornell, wow!
We all are getting older and see these things go by before we even realize it.

Have fun flying that bird. A pic or two for the NJJF website when you get her airborne.

Hi Bob, don't if I can get done enough to fly it this year but next summer for sure. Katie is in Ithaca at Ithaca college. Cornell is also there at 25,000 students whereas Ithaca is about 6000 strong. She is majoring in occupational therapy, which is a 5 year program. To get a license to practise, you must have a Masters so this is going to take a little longer than originally planned!! With the cost of school today, I may be building airplanes from cardboard and powering them with rubber bands!!

Hope all is going well with you and your family, see ya
